Assistant/Associate Professor - Native American Community Health - Berkeley Social Welfare

The School of Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley seeks a faculty member with expertise in Native American (North American Indian, including Alaskan or Hawaiian Native) community health, defined broadly, and general well-being. The position will be a tenured faculty position at the level of Associate Professor, or tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

We seek an individual who has an established or promising record of research with substantial impact in the area of Native American community health and general well-being. This may include:

• Physical and mental health inequities and disparate outcomes (e.g., educational, economic);
• Joint impacts of racism and colonialism (TribalCrit) on wellbeing and indigenous survivance;
• Indigenous sovereignty including data, food, life ways, environment, etc.;
• Civic engagement and economic development; and
• Racial and cultural identity development and adjustment.

This may also include expertise on the ongoing implications of Native family integrity:

• Tribal sovereignty protections via tribal courts and the Indian Child Welfare Act;
• Engagement with the child welfare system nationally;
• Family functioning; and
• Tribal TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families).

PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.

• A PhD from an accredited school or university, or equivalent as recognized by Office Of Social Work Accreditation (OSWA) or International Social Work Degree Recognition and Evaluation Service (ISWDRES);
• An established or promising record of substantial scholarly impact in their areas of interest;
• General expertise in the fields of social work, social welfare, and Native American Studies;
• Evidence or promise of high impact, funded scholarship, with an emphasis on issues relevant to Native American health and well-being.

• An MSW degree with at least two years of post-MSW practice experience;
  experience in direct practice, research, or/and teaching in Native American communities;
• Evidence of engagement with Indigenous research methodologies;
• Capacity for interdisciplinary research and teaching; additional linkages to allied fields are also desirable (e,g, public policy, public health, social sector management, data science, law);
• Skills essential for mentoring students and engaging community leaders;
• Experience removing barriers and supporting the success and participation of all students;
• Commitment to participating in collegial teamwork and university citizenship needed for a range of leadership roles in a public institution;
• Demonstrated capacity to engage with tribal nations (and unrecognized tribal communities) and other indigenous groups based on the west coast of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii).
