Who We Are: The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) represents over 117,000 members and nearly 400 locals across the state and employs a full-time staff of over 150. Overview of Position: The Retirement Consultant provides retirement advice to MTA members individually and in group settings. Essential Job Functions: • Provides advice to individual members concerning retirement benefits under the laws and regulations governing retirement benefits for Massachusetts public employees. • Conduct meetings and seminars on retirement benefits requested by MTA affiliates. • Works in harmony with other divisions, staff, officers, and members to achieve MTA goals. • Carries out responsibilities with a positive, cooperative spirit. Specific Responsibilities: • Provides advice at meetings, conferences and Saturday consulting sessions as assigned by the coordinator. • Assists other consultants as needed. • Provides advice and assistance to field staff and MTA locals by telephone, personal contact, and correspondence. • Maintains confidentiality of individual information. • Treats MTA members seeking advice and guidance with respect, and empathy. • Provides reports as requested and complies with administrative procedures. • Disseminates retirement information and materials. • Maintains currency in the laws, regulations and rules governing the retirement benefits of all segments of the MTA membership - K-12, higher education, and education support professionals. Attends meetings as requested by the coordinator. • Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: • MTA member. • Ability to assist members by providing preliminary benefit calculations. • Knowledgeable about current retirement benefits available to all segments of the MTA membership and willingness to keep up with new developments in the law, regulations, and rules. • Excellent communication skills. Ability to explain the complicated retirement issues facing MTA members in simple, clear, and precise language. • Excellent public speaking skills.
