UCI Human Resources (HR) serves the UCI enterprise in three distinct business units: Health (Academic Hospitals and Community Network), College of Health Sciences, and Main Campus. Your Role on the Team

The Senior Director, Workforce Relations is a senior leader within the UCI HR Partnership for Strategy and Innovation (Partnership) with the responsibility of providing strategic vision, leadership, and oversight for labor relations, employee relations, workplace investigations, and policy administration across the UCI enterprise, including main Campus, Health Sciences, and UCI Health.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President - UCI Health/Vice Chancellor, Human Resources - UC Irvine (SVP/VC), The Senior Director is responsible for establishing strategic objectives, work plans, and guiding high-impact workforce programs. The Senior Director delegates assignments to subordinate managers. Primarily responsible for reviewing and approving recommendations for workforce (labor and employee relations) programs that have impact on all business units. Involved in developing, modifying and executing policies that affect immediate operation(s) and also has organization-wide effect. Under the general direction of the SVP/VC, is responsible for representing the organization at systemwide labor relations negotiations. Responsible for making decisions that have a significant effect on the organizational operations and that are legally enforceable. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules. May represent the SVP/VC at regional and systemwide meetings and serve as the delegated back-up for approval and other actions.

  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the goals of the organization and ways in which this position can support those goals.
  • Provides written analyses and oral presentations to management. Interpersonal skills to effectively lead motivate and influence others.
  • Advanced knowledge of labor and employment law and the principles and techniques of labor negotiations which must be continually updated.
  • Recognizes issues that have organizational impact or future implications and advises manager appropriately.
  • Advanced knowledge of other areas with human resources function including compensation, employee relations, and employee benefits.
  • Advanced leadership abilities to establish department goals, and motivate and influence others to achieve.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of both medical center and campus policies and procedures relating to budget and HR-related matters.
  • Requires highly sophisticated negotiation and communication skills.
  • Must be aware of the dynamics associated with each negotiation in order to effectively represent the organization's interests.
  • Advanced ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations / individuals. Requires skills associated with working in a highly collaborative manner.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of the principles of advocacy, and applicable state and federal laws and court decisions.
  • Requires highly sophisticated negotiation and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects with diverse groups. Ability to effectively lead work groups, maintain focus of objectives, and successfully deliver results.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Ten years of progressively broad and functionally diverse HR experience
  • Five years' experience as an HR manager or director
  • Experience with public sector collective bargaining. Knowledge of HEERA, PERB, NLRB, labor and employment laws

Preferred:

  • Professional experience working in a higher education institution.
  • Advanced degree in business, Human Resources, or related field

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $145,200 - $289,000 (Annual).
