Job Summary:

The Sr. Manager of Markets Engineering, Design and Fabrication is responsible for leading the engineering, design, and fabrication of applications equipment to support Messer Americas' market segments, ensuring technical excellence and adherence to safety standards. The Sr. Manager of Markets Engineering owns equipment standards and ensures all new and modified designs align with PHA, LOPA, HAZOP, and EMOC requirements. It also ensures that all equipment is reliable, cost-effective, properly documented, and ready for use in customer operations.

Principal Responsibilities:




  • Direct, develop, mentor, and motivate a team of highly skilled and experienced engineers and professionals


  • Establish and maintain strategic vendor relationships to ensure continuity of equipment supply while meeting Messer cost and quality expectations


  • Understand the engineering support needs of the Field Project Execution team along with the Application Sales and Commercial Sales teams and assign resources accordingly.
  • Set the strategic direction and deliverables for the design, engineering, and fabrication team to support the needs of the Messer value added business in North America:

    • The overall budgets, capex, timelines, and applications equipment inventory
    • Discipline engineering support for the Markets Segment and Project Execution team for business development, proposals, and project work
    • Identification of debottleneck and efficiency improvement opportunities and cost savings





    • Develop and execute an Application Equipment strategy which balances demand versus inventory, lead time, vendor capability and shop loading



  • Work with Messer Procurement to ensure costs and delivery meet the business & customer needs


  • Ensuring alignment with the HSE and Project Execution Teams to provide leadership and expertise in:

    • Engineering management of change
    • Risk assessment, incl. HAZOP, LOPA, etc.
    • Support the Investigation of all safety incidents, including root cause analysis and sharing of lessons learned


  • Support and steer the technical learning for the team:

    • Define training needs for the Engineering organization
    • Manage the Learning Management System to track training for all direct reports


  • Lead root cause analysis for extraordinary applications equipment issues in the Americas; provide forensic process engineering as needed in understanding timeline and triggers.
  • Support the Messer Application Development team with engineering expertise in the development of new products and applications
  • Develop and maintain applications equipment standards for Messer Americas, particularly as they relate to Technology, Controls and Safety
  • Represent Messer Americas in external industry bodies as needed, such as the CGA

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably mechanical or chemical, advanced degree preferred (M.S. or Ph.D.)

At least 15 years within the Industrial Gases business, of which



  • At least 5 years in a management role
  • At least 15 years in an Engineering role


The salary range for this position is $130,913-$192,006 . Messer provides medical, dental, vision, short term disability, life insurance and paid time off as well as other voluntary benefits, such as, long term disability in accordance with the terms and conditions of these Plans. Employees are eligible to enroll in Messer's 401(k) Plan. Employees may be eligible to participate in the company's bonus program
