Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Laboratory Engineer for The Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation within the School of Engineering. This position reports directly to the Project Engineer II position at the Rutgers University Asphalt/Pavement Laboratory ( RAPL) within the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation ( CAIT).

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Supports pavement-related research activities under the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) at Rutgers University.
  • Performs professional, standardized and research grade level experiments and analysis on pavement construction and performance.
  • Conducts data analysis of large datasets and provide concise and organized research reports/reporting. Presentation of data and resultant analysis may also be required.
  • Develops and publishes technical reports and peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as assists and develops research proposals.
  • Trains and leads students and technicians in a variety of established field testing procedures and should have some experience doing so.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a scientific field with emphasis on engineering applications and data analysis.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience working with equipment utilized for network and project level pavement evaluation.

Certifications/Licenses

  • A valid New Jersey driver's license.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Computer literacy with emphasis on analyzing large datasets is mandatory.
  • The position requires knowledge and expertise in the collection and analysis of pavement distress and ride quality testing.
  • The position also requires the understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) and how it can be incorporated and utilized in data mining and analysis of large datasets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree or higher in civil engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Prefers three years of experience in asphalt materials, pavement testing, or related fields.
  • Experience with data analysis tools, particularly MATLAB, is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with pavement performance testing, interpreting test results, and contributing to data-driven decision-making is desirable.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical findings effectively through reports or presentations are also preferred.

Equipment Utilized

  • Experience with reference profile systems, high-speed inertial profilers, and automated pavement distress collection equipment is required.
  • The applicant must be able to interpret and troubleshoot data from these systems to support pavement condition evaluation and pavement management activities.
  • Proficiency with data analysis and reporting software is essential.
  • The applicant should be capable of identifying data quality issues and contributing to the development of clear, accurate technical reports to inform pavement management decisions.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • The position has numerous physical activities, some that require the moving and lifting of heavy materials.
