The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University has a student body of 1,200 undergraduates, 260 graduate students, and 70 primary and 73 program faculty. Job Summary

The Kwong Laboratory in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech & Emory School of Medicine the invites applications for a non-tenure track research faculty position.

Founded in 2014 by Director Dr. Gabe Kwong, the mission of LSI is to pioneer the next wave of immunotherapies and diagnostics to intercept diseases at an early stage and develop treatments that drive deep responses to meaningfully improve patient outcomes. We are currently seeking exceptional individuals to join our research group as a Research Scientist. The successful candidate will be a motivated and creative individual that will pioneer new categories of immune biosensors that leverage design principles from synthetic biology and cell engineering for early cancer detection. They will take a lead role in experimental design, execution of experiments, and interpretation of results to achieve the major objectives of the project. The successful candidate will thrive on teamwork and collaboration. They will embrace a fast-paced environment and work closely with lab members to cultivate a positive environment. This is a unique opportunity to join a well-funded research group with a track-record of academic excellence, breakthrough innovation and technology translation.

Responsibilities

  1. Manage lab supplies including, ordering supplies, maintaining inventory, receiving and storing incoming packages, etc.
  2. Perform general lab maintenance tasks including re-stocking sterile consumables for tissue culture, performing equipment cleaning and calibrations, coordinating disposal and/or pickup of biohazard and chemical waste, etc.
  3. Support preclinical and/or in vitro experiments
  4. Assist in pharmacology techniques and procedures in animal models of cancer (e.g., biofluid collection, injections, necropsy, tumor inoculation, imaging).
  5. Provide husbandry support including breeding, genotyping, selection, and maintenance of multiple animal colonies.
  6. Perform culture, characterization, and manipulation of human cancer cell lines, and run assays (ELISA, nucleic acid extraction, flow cytometry, sorting, RT-qPCR, gel electrophoresis, etc.).
  7. Perform molecular cloning, including construct purification, vector construction, nucleic acid preparation, sequencing, QC, and interpretation.
  8. Produce, characterize and titer viruses for human cell transduction and engineering.
  9. Document the design, methodology, and results of experiments in electronic lab notebooks.
  10. Participate in regular internal project meetings with team members.
  11. Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

This position vacancy is an open rank announcement. Research Engineer I

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, or related area.

Research Engineer II

  • A Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, or related area, and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, or related area, and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • Doctoral degree
