Job Summary

THIS POSITION IS PERMANENTLY LOCATED IN SAN BERNARDINO, CA!
THE WORK SCHEDULE OF TUESDAY-SATURDAY; 8:00AM-5:00PM IS A PERMANENT WORK SCHEDULE!
Under supervision of the section supervisor and scientific direction of the faculty program leader, independently performs sample management, processing, testing, data entry, laboratory maintenance, and media preparation for food safety according to established protocols. Perform regulatory testing in milk quality according to specified protocols. The Milk Quality section includes FDA-approved testing such as tests for antibiotic residues, phosphatase, microbial counts, freezing point analysis, sediment determination, somatic cell count, yeast and mold, laboratory pasteurization count, residual bacterial/coliform count and MPN for dairy waters. Responsible for participating in the updating and development of analytical procedures, quality control procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS). Responsible for maintaining an inventory, ordering supplies and ensuring the proper operation, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • B.A. or B.S in Biology, Microbiology or Bacteriology or work experience in Microbiology.
  • Experience in performing general laboratory procedures including skills to calculate weights/volumes and prepare media and reagents, maintain documents, computer skills to quickly and accurately perform data entry of test results into computer and writing skills to produce clear, concise reports.
  • Knowledge of microbiology basic laboratory techniques.
  • Skills to organize work activity, follow standard operating procedures with strict attention to detail, flexibility to adapt to a changing environment and workload, and work independently and efficiently in a high throughput laboratory under supervision to meet standard laboratory turnaround times.
  • Knowledge and skills to perform and interpret regulatory testing methods, and troubleshoot current testing methods, and the skills to follow, maintain, and adhere to QC/QA procedures/documentation.
  • Skills to operate, maintain and troubleshoot manual and computer-controlled instrumentation including an electronic somatic cell counter, pH meter, centrifuges, balances, heating blocks, inhibitor testing devices and other analytical instrumentation.
  • Skills to maintain organization of sample receiving, storage and disposal, and adhere to strict sample chain of custody procedures, and skills to provide records management of work performed; maintain accurate inventory, and quality control records for biological media.
  • Knowledge of safe laboratory practice and procedures and skills to follow safe working practices, including appropriately handling and disposal of hazardous (chemical or biologically infectious) materials or waste in the recommended manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification by FDA to perform regulatory testing.
  • Background and experience in regulatory testing of dairy products.
  • Advanced software skills to organize data, and quality assurance records.

Department Overview

CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animal and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's disease warning system through its animal disease surveillance program. The system consists of four laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies and provides full-service drug testing and a pharmacology research and development program.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential. Per the terms and agreements of the department's contracts and grants, the position requires signing of a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding testing and client information. Due to the nature of the essential responsibilities, this position is not eligible for remote work. This position is subject to UCD's vaccination program (Influenza, SARS-CoV-2, is/might be subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies), and Medical/Health Surveillance Program/Procedures/Review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Work Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday; 8:00am - 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period). Work flexible schedule/overtime as needed to complete projects and meet deadlines. Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation. Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e. outbreaks, fiscal close, audit periods, proficiency tests etc.). Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc.
