Job Summary

The Student Services Specialist in the Veteran Services Center is responsible for providing comprehensive "One-Stop" student services, serving as a key resource across multiple areas of student support. This role requires independent assessments and recommendations for students, parents, community members, and college staff, ensuring alignment with established guidelines. The specialist assists in the administration of the Veteran Education Benefit Program and delivers essential support services to aid student veterans in successfully reaching their educational goals. Core student services include admissions, advising, testing, financial aid, registration, and veteran services. Additionally, the specialist offers holistic advisement and guidance to veteran students and their dependents, assisting with admissions, records management, and registration processes. Responsibilities extend to degree and certificate program planning, university transfer requirements, and graduation criteria, while also fulfilling duties as a Veteran Affairs (VA) School Certifying Official (SCO). This position involves conducting preliminary transcript evaluations, determining transfer credit equivalencies, and requesting official Joint Services Transcripts. The specialist utilizes external VA systems to certify and ensure federally mandated reporting of student enrollment while maintaining and updating student files with precision to comply with VA/State Approving Agency (AA) audit standards. A strong commitment to exceptional customer service and a service-first, solutions-focused approach is essential in this role. The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative team environment, actively engaging with students, faculty, and staff to support students in accomplishing their academic goals. Additional duties may be assigned to support the objectives of the One Maricopa initiative.

Essential Functions

30% - Determines student eligibility by collecting the necessary paperwork and data input in Enrollment Manager and Student Information Systems (SIS)

30% - Advise students, parents, college staff and community members on policies, procedures, and processes related to multiple functional areas, (admissions, advising, testing, registration, veterans' services, and financial aid), and responding to a variety of general inquiries/request

15% - Monitors current and former Veteran student files for status changes, ensuring accuracy and reporting changes to the Veterans Administration Regional Office

15% - Coordinate events, presentations, trainings, and workshops

10% - Process department requisitions, order office supplies, and other duties assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution, and one year full-time of student services or college teaching experience or experience assisting with educational program development and coordination, student advisement, financial aid, customer service, or related student development programs.

OR

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

A. One (1) or more years' experience working in a higher education environment

B. Experience as a member of any branch of the United States Armed Forces (Active Duty, National Guard, or Reserve)

C. Currently certified as U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs School Certifying Official

D. One (1) or more years of experience preparing materials and/or reporting out to a state or federal agency with high levels of compliance and accuracy.

E. One (1) or more years' experiencing developing presentations

F. One (1) or more years' experience in outreach and/or recruitment functions within higher education

G. One (1) or more years' experience using technology (such as Student Information Systems, Microsoft Office Suite or Google Suite) to support academic advising, student success, student learning, and/or career advising

Special Working Conditions
  • Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required; must meet minimum standards regarding driving: http://www.maricopa.edu/legal/rmi/vehicle.htm#requirements
  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
  • Will be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations
  • May require numerous evenings or weekends
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
