Assistant Professor (50%) / Assistant Professor In-Residence (50%) of Biostatistics

Position Available: Assistant Professor (50%) / Assistant Professor In-Residence (50%) of Biostatistics in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology in the School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis.

Qualifications:

We are seeking an outstanding research-focused Assistant Professor of Biostatistics with demonstrated expertise and interest in design and analysis of complex trials of public-health or biomedical interventions and epidemiologic and/or biomedical studies. Particular consideration will be given to candidates with an interest in biostatistical methods related to collaborative biomedical research, with a focus on one or more of the following areas: vector-borne diseases, field studies to evaluate interventions, high-dimensional data analysis, environmental health, causal inference, clinical trials, or cancer studies. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree in statistics, biostatistics, or a closely related field with research experience in biostatistics, experimental design, and statistical modeling of animal or human health outcomes. A documented record of collaborative research, and scholarly publication in peer-reviewed journals is required, along with clear evidence of, or potential for, securing extramural research funding. The position also requires demonstrated experience teaching biostatistics, and the potential or evidence of ability to perform well teaching at undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels.

Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. Participation in department, school, and university service is an expectation under our faculty shared governance model.

This faculty position will be in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, & Immunology within the School of Veterinary Medicine and will receive 50% FTE salary and benefits support for teaching, research, and service effort. The 50% Assistant Professor In-Residence component of this faculty position requires salary and benefits funding recovered through the candidate's extramurally supported research programs. During the first two years of the position, this 50% support will be provided by the Pacific Southwest Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases for research on design and analysis of trials for the control of vector-borne diseases. Over time, this position will be expected to fund the 50% "in-residence" component through the development of an independent program of methodological and applied research in their area of interest, including cultivation of collaborations within and outside the department. The position will offer many avenues for collaboration with the School of Veterinary Medicine, School of Medicine, and other colleges on the UC Davis campus.

Responsibilities:

Research: Creative, focused, and productive research program in biostatistics consistent with the needs of the School of Veterinary Medicine with an emphasis on experimental design, spatio-temporal data analysis, and statistical modeling of animal and human health outcomes. Because the position will be supported by extramural funds from the Pacific Southwest Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases, emphasis on experimental and observational study design and advanced computational methods that could be used to evaluate interventions for the control of vector-borne diseases is a fundamental and indispensable requirement of the position, including publication of results in peer-reviewed professional/scientific journals.

Teaching: Responsibilities include teaching biostatistics through: 1) participation in the graduate academic programs (MPVM and MS and PhD in epidemiology) of the campus; 2) assigned teaching activities in the DVM professional curriculum; and 3) mentorship of undergraduate, professional, and/or graduate students.

Service: Participation in University shared governance through committee service; public service through collaboration and consultation on evaluations of vector control strategies with public health partners in California and other states and territories in the Pacific Southwest and Pacific islands; regular consultation on statistical questions to support research within the School of Veterinary Medicine; participation in professional organizations; continuing education and other appropriate means are expected.

Professional Competence: Will advance the disciplines of biostatistics, public health, wildlife health, and/or infectious disease prevention within the School of Veterinary Medicine. Expected to establish a reputation for excellence locally, regionally, and nationally.

If the successful candidate's research interests are aligned with the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) and its mission-oriented research, a split appointment as Biostatistician in the AES is possible.
