OverviewEmployee must support the mission of UnityPoint Health - Des Moines, and the vision of the Laboratory, by demonstrating a strong commitment to Personal and Service Excellence and CORE Values. Under the leadership of the Laboratory Supervisor, this position will deliver clinical and non-clinical services to support patient centered care. The phlebotomist is responsible for timely, accurate, and efficient blood specimen collection. This contributes directly to patient care and patient experience. ResponsibilitiesObtains adequate blood specimens from all inpatients (obstetric, medical/surgical, mental health, oncology, rehabilitation, renal, neurological) outpatients, emergency care, non-patient services, (physician clinics, wellness/fitness, environmental monitoring, pediatric) in all age groups. Labels all specimens in accordance with standards. Supports the LEAN principles of one piece flow and first in first out when delivering patient samples to the laboratory. Adheres to standard work processes and meets productivity standards. Exercises judgment in determining work priority. Interacts with nursing units and clients to ascertain critical priorities and verify discrepancies which include judging specimen acceptability and canceling tests as needed. Implements the continuous quality improvement process by exemplifying a professional, compassionate, and cooperative representative of the Laboratory, thus providing excellent customer service. QualificationsEDUCATION: Required: High school graduate or equivalent. Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English. Preferred: Successful completion of a phlebotomy course.
