Overview

The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist is responsible for the delivery of the Therapeutic Recreation Program, including the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and documentation of group activities. The role requires collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, participation in treatment planning, and involvement in unit/department meetings. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist will perform a variety of duties aimed at enhancing patient well-being through therapeutic recreation activities.

Responsibilities

Direct/Indirect Patient Care:

* Demonstrates teaching competence in the following areas: leisure education, communication skills, family issues, sexuality, self-esteem, coping skills, stress and relaxation, values clarification, health and fitness, and substance abuse.

* Plan and implement a variety of therapeutic programs, including:
o Coping Skills Development
o Relaxation/Mindfulness Techniques
o Leisure Education
o Exercise/ Healthy and Wellness Programs
o Recreational/Social Skills Group Activities

* Evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic programs.

* Document patient progress and program outcomes in compliance with facility standards.

* Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to coordinate care.

* Contribute to treatment planning and patient goal setting.

* Attend unit/department meetings to discuss program updates and improvements.

* Establish professional competence in the delivery of effective group therapy in a manner, which is consistent with the hospital mission, vision and values.

* Demonstrated ability to maintain professional objectivity.

* Evidences ability to apply professional judgement in assessment, intervention and evaluation for patients.

* Demonstrates skill in the selection of appropriate treatment interventions.

* Shows initiative and insight in suggesting new areas for program development.

Organizational Contribution:

* Leads clinical development team projects that are aligned with organizational priorities and goals; significant personal contribution to clinical project(s) annually.

* Develops and leads clinical programs that are aligned with organizational priorities and goals as assigned by supervisor/manager.

* Supports the development of others through activities such as mentoring, develop/ present clinical in-services, news/article development or written materials. This may include education to team members outside of department.

* Develops and participates in community education and activities sponsored by UPH.

* Identifies, leads, and/or develops evidence-based treatment methods and plans for implementation within their discipline and across appropriate therapy sites and/or disciplines.

* Evidences ability to recognize own strengths and limitations and selects appropriate professional
developmental strategies (supervision, continuing education, etc.).


Qualifications

Education: B.A. or B.S. Required in Recreation Therapy.

Experience: 1 year of recreation therapy experience within inpatient or outpatient setting required. Internship will be considered. Experience in therapeutic recreation within a healthcare setting.

License(s)/Certification(s): Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. NCTRC certification required within 6 months of higher.
Certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Meets professional qualifications delineated by the NCTRC, ATRA, and DNV. Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.

Other: Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
