Department Summary

The Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism at UNT is among the nation's top schools for journalism and mass communication, with undergraduate and graduate degree programs that prepare students for careers in print & digital journalism, broadcast journalism, advertising, public relations and photojournalism.

Position Overview

This position will be the Assistant to the Dean of Mayborn School of Journalism. They will provide support for budgets, hiring, events, travel and purchasing.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and five years' of highly responsible and varied office administration or business management experience; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills. Knowledge of UNT accounting/budgeting procedures.
  • Ability to work under pressure, to adjust to constant changes, and to handle multiple tasks.
  • Adept at creating and maintaining a team-first environment by developing good working relationships and efficiently coordinating the work of others in a supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to keep complex records, to assemble and organize data of complex nature, and to prepare and submit reports in acceptable formats.
  • Ability to conceptualize, plan and organize multiple programs and assignments effectively.
  • Ability to work on complex and confidential tasks utilizing judgment, tact, and resourcefulness.
  • Knowledge of UNT policies, practices, procedures and terminology of assigned function.


Job Duties:



  • Work in conjunction with MSOJ staff to plan, execute and attend Mayborn events including the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference, Celebrate Mayborn, and Mayborn Mentors.
  • Lead MSOJ staff through various projects. Maintain in-depth knowledge of UNT process and procedures (including payroll, purchasing, and travel), providing relevant information to faculty and staff.
  • Manage MSOJ budgets including processing gifts to the School, MSOJ student orgs, NT Daily Advertisements, and faculty travel. Work with CLASS (College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences) Budget Officer on ABAs/IDTs and other budget-related questions.
  • Work closely with MSOJ Marketing Director to ensure events are planned and advertised to students in a timely manner. Handle room reservations, catering, setup and teardown for all MSOJ events.
  • Maintain training calendar to ensure all staff and faculty are current for trainings as required by UNT.
  • Serve as MSOJ liaison, including attending meetings and trainings on behalf of Mayborn as needed. Build relationships with outside organizations and other UNT areas.
  • Take meeting minutes as required for various meetings, including the Mayborn Advisory Board. Work in conjunction with Board to schedule meetings, reserve space, and secure parking.
  • Provides administrative support for MSOJ Dean: schedule and coordinate meetings, collect data for decision making, communicate MSOJ needs and/or problems, handle email correspondence, create and process travel as needed, work closely with Dean to develop events, represent the Dean to other University departments as needed.
  • Provide administrative support during the hiring process for all fulltime MSOJ staff: work with CLASS Executive Dean's Office to post position in PageUp; update position descriptions as needed; schedule interviews with relevant MSOJ and CLASS representatives; process ePARs ensuring all information is accurate.
  • Provide administrative support during the hiring process for MSOJ faculty: work with CLASS Executive Dean's Office to post position in PageUp; plan and book travel for candidates in conjunction with hiring committees; process ePARs per UNT instructions ensuring all information is accurate.

Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm / 40hrs per week
