Department Summary

The Department of Chemistry offers various opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students interested in cutting-edge technology and research. We allow students to pursue their scientific creativity with guidance from leading chemistry faculty. Chemistry is the study of matter and its reactions, provides a basic understanding needed to deal with a variety of societal and scientific needs, including energy, food production, health and medicine, biotechnology, new materials, environmental concerns, new processes, and national defense. Chemistry is a science central to the study of medicine, biology and modern physics.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

This position has primary responsibility for overseeing recruiting, admissions, enrollment, and advising for the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in the Chemistry Department. The position serves as the primary liaison to the Toulouse Graduate School, the College of Science, the Chemistry Graduate Affairs Committee, the Department Chair, and the Chemistry faculty on all matters involving the graduate program.

The position also coordinates assessment and curriculum changes for both the graduate program and, to a lesser extent, the undergraduate programs in Chemistry.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related field and one year of professional related experience in coordinating or administering higher education programming or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.


Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:



  • Previous experience with student recruiting. Experience with graduate student admissions, enrollment, and other university systems.
  • Ability to travel with occasional overnight stays.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service skills.


Job Duties:



  • Supervise a student assistant, when available, who helps with graduate and REU recruiting and admissions, course/program marketing, maintenance of physical and electronic displays of grad related information, and other duties as needed.
  • Plan and coordinate significant events for the graduate and undergraduate program, including Graduate Visitation Weekend, Fall Mixer, Seminar Day, and Departmental Honors Day.
  • As needed, provide support for students in the REU program, undergraduates seeking research experience, and high school groups visiting the department.
  • Coordinate data collection and help prepare assessment reports for IE, THECB, accrediting agencies, and program reviews.
  • Coordinate graduate student recruiting and admissions.
  • Provide administrative support to the Graduate Affairs Committee and Undergraduate Affairs Committee; serve as liaison to the Toulouse Graduate School.
  • Coordinate assignment of teaching assistantships, tuition benefits, and other forms of graduate student financial support; coordinate application and award process for departmental scholarships.
  • Coordinate workflow for graduate and undergraduate curriculum changes, in cooperation with departmental faculty.
  • Coordinate orientation, enrollment, and advising of graduate students in academic matters; monitor academic progress and degree plans.


Work Schedule:

A typical Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm work schedule is expected.
