About the Job

Duties/Responsibilities:
Main duties are to assist with tasks related to seed collection, processing, and propagation of aquatic plants.

  • 50% Perform laboratory and benchwork tasks related to plant ecology experiments under supervision of a PhD student and / or research staff.
    -Collect, record, and manage field and laboratory data accurately
  • 50% Conduct fieldwork in lakes under supervision of a PhD student and / or research staff.
    -Operate and work from boats, canoes, and while wearing waders.
    -Transport and carry equipment, often over uneven terrain or in water.
    -Troubleshoot field and lab challenges with a flexible and solutions-oriented approach.

Flexible start and end dates between May 1 and Sept 30, 2025. We anticipate this position to have a flexible part-time schedule determined by phenology of experimental germination trials and weather for field work, totaling an average of 10-20 hours per week.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:
Strong interest in aquatic plant ecology and conservation.
Experience handling and identifying aquatic plants.
Comfortable working in and around water in a variety of conditions.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in field and lab settings.
Some experience with field data collection and/or lab work.
Physical capability to carry heavy equipment and work in variable weather conditions.
Problem-solving skills and adaptability in dynamic field conditions.

Preferred qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree (or in progress) in Ecology, Fisheries and Wildlife, Botany, Environmental Science or related field.
Snorkeling or SCUBA experience.
Strong swimming skills.

About the Department

The Larkin Lab at The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, is seeking an enthusiastic and capable undergraduate research technician to assist with ongoing research in aquatic plant ecology and conservation. This position will support research investigating aquatic revegetation after treatment of aquatic invasive plants

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $15.25 - $18.25; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
