What You Will Do: As a Line Locator, you will play an essential role within our Wasilla Field Construction department, reporting to Northern Division Operations Supervisor. The primary responsibility of the Line Locator is to inspect construction and excavation sites, complete distribution/high-pressure standbys, perform design locates/surveys, marking utility lines to prevent damage to ENSTAR's facilities during residential or commercial work. Additionally, the Line Locator will complete various distribution tasks, including meter reading, collections, leak surveying, installation of temporary and permanent service lines, main installations, equipment maintenance, and other distribution duties as assigned. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Schedule a route of locates based on daily requests (may also respond to locates by radio dispatch); discuss locates with owners or contractors (when available) upon arrival; cross-check information with GIS and as-builts.
- Interpret construction drawings and work order specifications; mark the location of underground utilities and trenches to be dug using stakes, flags, or spray paint; document information on gas line locate forms, within MWM or other applications.
- Observe work progress and report damage such as damaged or exposed pipes and cables or caved-in vaults, indicating the urgency of required repairs.
- Ability to complete "hard to locate forms" and return to engineering department.
- Coordinate gas construction and maintenance projects with underground work of municipal and state departments or other utilities.
- Observe contractors performing tasks near gas lines; may halt projects if safety becomes a factor.
- Complete and document required distribution and high-pressure standbys.
- Install, repair, and maintain underground polyethylene and steel gas mains and service lines using several types of equipment.
- Lay, repair, and extend underground plastic gas mains and service lines.
- Fuse pipe and fittings as required.
- Cut pressurized main and service lines to allow extensions and repairs.
- Pressure test pipes for weak joints and leaks.
- Repair existing distribution systems, both mains and service lines, under normal or emergency situations.
- Train and lead temporary employees.
- Perform distribution duties as assigned during the calendar year.
- Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Safely operate company vehicles in a constant state of alertness.
- Maintain, inventory, and order necessary line locator devices/equipment.
What You Will Bring: Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- One year of line locating experience preferred.
- One year of pipe laying, fitting, and fusion experience preferred.
- Leadership experience with the ability to lead a team through tasks or processes.
- Possession of a current commercial Alaska driver's license (CDL) and qualification to operate a vehicle under ENSTAR's Driving Policy preferred.
- One year of leak survey experience preferred.
- One year of meter reading experience preferred.
- Demonstrated mechanical and electrical aptitude.
- Experience in roles requiring a customer service focus.
- Ability to pass federally required initial and continuous Operator Qualifications training.
- Valid Alaska driver's license and qualification to operate a vehicle under ENSTAR's Driving Policy.
- Ability to pass drug, background, past employment, and driving record screenings.
Preferred skills and qualifications:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively interact with individuals within and outside of ENSTAR.
- Intermediate knowledge of construction practices and piped distribution systems; ability to perform related tasks.
- Ability to work safely in general and safely operate or work around equipment used in the installation and repair of mains and/or service lines.
- Ability to work independently and be self-directed.
- Basic understanding of utility transmission and distribution systems and related records systems.
- Proficiency in operating and servicing pipe locators and accurately locating underground facilities by various methods.
- Thorough knowledge of construction and repair procedures.
- Aptitude and ability to perform minor mapping functions.
- Ability to operate various locating instruments, interpret as-builts, MWM, GIS mapping, and use tools such as pipe wrenches, stakes, 4-pound hammers, tape measures, and vehicle-installed radios.
- Ability to learn and understand ENSTAR's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as they relate to fieldwork.
- Knowledge and familiarity with the road system in the Northern Division.
- Ability to work with a field crew in a team environment.
- Legible handwriting and ability to complete detailed paperwork.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn ENSTAR's software programs (Customer Care & Billing, Mobile Workforce Management, Itron, etc.).
