Executive Director - Core Research Facilities

General Summary of Position:

The Executive Director is responsible for oversight and management of the Core Research Facilities and Staff, as well as the continued development and growth of the laboratories.

Responsibilities of the Executive Director of the CRF encompass oversight of the operations, including business operation services, financial management, strategic planning for the CRF laboratories, internal and external marketing of the CRF, community outreach practices, and development of guidelines directed at creating best practices in a manner consistent across all of the CRF laboratories, and ensuring financial compliance with government regulations and guidelines.

The Executive Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining a culture of partnership amongst CRF laboratories, the UMass Lowell research enterprise, UMass Lowell industry partners, and the UMass core laboratory system.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):



  • Bachelor's degree and 10 years of Business Management experience or a Master's degree in Sciences/MBA with 7 years of demonstrated business management experience.
  • Clear understanding of government (OMB & FAR) regulations and requirement, relational databases.
  • Experience in creating and managing budgets
  • Familiarity with research equipment
  • Given the nature and responsibilities of the position, only U.S. persons (any individual who is a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident alien of the United States, or a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C.1324b(a)(3)) will be considered for this position.


Additional Considerations:



  • Experience in developing cost models and business plans
  • Supervisory experience, and experience in building teams and partnerships
  • Experience in promoting research capabilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including grant writing
  • Strong presentation skills in both development of presentations and delivering to small and large audiences.
  • Ability to work with a broad range and diverse population of people
  • Proven track record of implementing new programs and change management.
  • Experience in relationship building both within and external to the organization; comfortable with networking at events and reaching out to expand the CRF's network.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • The CRF infrastructure model is solidly established and continues to evolve as we creatively consider means of capabilities expansion and income growth. Requires solid business management experience and creative problem solving. The CRF structure and process incorporates a multitude of regulations and fiscal compliance issues, as well as procedures across campus.
  • Excellent internal and external "customer service" skills with the ability to work across the University with all levels of personnel (from students, to staff, to investigators, to administrators) as well as with industry, academic and government users.
