Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in rehabilitation services, recreation, psychology, sociology, recreation therapy, education, allied health, or mental health/human services and experience equivalent to two years of full-time experience in recreation therapy or responsible professional experience in therapy, education, or recreation work.

Substitution of Education for Experience: Additional graduate coursework from an accredited college or university in rehabilitation services, recreation, recreation therapy, or education may be substituted for the required experience, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of two years.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying full-time experience in recreation, teaching, or in providing aid or assistance to disabled individuals may be substituted for the required education, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of four years.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Positions within the Division of Rehabilitation Services of the Department of Human Services will be required to:
1. Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority;
2. Agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointing authority;
3. Supply a fingerprint sample prescribed by the TBI based criminal history records check;
4. Submit to a review of their status on the Department of Health's vulnerable persons registry.

Overview

Under general supervision, is responsible for professional recreation therapy work of considerable difficulty and supervisory work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required. This is the highest level class in the recreation therapy sub-series. An employee in this class supervises or assists a supervisor in planning a therapeutic program at a facility or agency and may supervise a staff of recreation therapy personnel. This class differs from Recreation Therapist 2 in that an incumbent of the latter plans and executes recreational activities, therapies, and programs.

Responsibilities

  1. Assures departmental and facility policy is followed during implementation of recreational therapies to comply with state and federal law and accrediting bodies. Develops and submits proposals concerning the establishment of therapeutic recreation policy and procedure to guarantee compliance.
  2. Plans, directs, and approves programs for individuals receiving recreational therapy services to ensure effective service delivery. Identifies the needs, goals and objectives for individuals in recreational therapy utilizing individual assessments, observations, referrals, and inter-disciplinary team findings to ensure appropriate services are provided and develops therapeutic treatment plans to ensure client outcomes are met.
  3. Supervises and schedules specific recreational and social activities to assist in meeting desired client and program outcomes including assigning subordinate staff their work.
  4. Conducts the employee evaluation process to provide feedback to employees regarding their job performance and develops corrective action plans for unsatisfactory performance. Provides guidance, trains, and motivates staff to increase performance and improve client outcomes.
  5. Supervises the recreational program to complement the total treatment programs so appropriate services are provided. Evaluates and assesses client progress to determine effectiveness of recreational therapies and recommends changes for improvements to further advance clients toward their goals and objectives.
  6. Oversees the workflow and processing of documentation within the unit to ensure effective and quality services are delivered. Ensures files are maintained and updated through periodic review.
  7. Communicates relevant information to supervisors and co-workers providing information to ensure staff awareness of changes and improvements needed at the facility. May act as community liaison by establishing recreational therapy internships and/or interpreting rules, regulations, and laws for programs and the public.
  8. Completes annual equipment requests to ensure staff has appropriate resources and materials to complete their job responsibilities.
