TITLE: Infrastructure Design Specialist DEPARTMENT: Territorial Information Technology STATUS: Exempt - Full Time PAY RANGE: $80,000-$90,000 THE SALVATION ARMY MISSION: The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. MAJOR FUNCTION: Designs complex solutions for IT infrastructure requests from Salvation Army sites while following policy, industry best practices, and Salvation Army IT Department architecture standards. Generates specifications and recommendations for expected scope. Creates Requests For Proposal, and other documentation for installation of proposed solutions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Site Evaluation (50%)
- Travel to Salvation Army sites to document status and to evaluate needs and budget.
- Meet with local stakeholders to evaluate needs. Determine expected growth, move, or remodel expectations.
- If applicable, measure and document performance of existing infrastructure components.
- Thoroughly document existing IT infrastructure as well as physical property. Note building structure type, state of repair, age, and other physical plant characteristics.
- Map the structure and grounds noting especially the location of the Main and any Intermediary Data Frames (MDF and IDF) as well as the Minimum Point of Entry (MPOE) for carrier services. Note all locations that contain proposed adds, moves, or deletes.
- Investigate any potential physical or cyber security risk factors (i.e. 3rd party security system, camera, or other non-TSA devices).
- Query offerings and availability of local pertinent vendors for potential solutions.
- Identify and share with local stakeholders any discovered issues or risks.
- Discuss potential solutions and ranges of potential costs for each with local stakeholders.
Design Solutions (40%)
- With all the parameters necessary in mind, design a detailed project to implement a solution, either in a single pass or in phases, looking toward the future needs of the site.
- Determine and refine requirements including issues expressed by local stakeholders, IT design standards, risk mitigation, and other relevant factors.
- Considering available funds, plan infrastructure modifications and upgrades suitable to the needs.
- Submit a design proposal to relevant IT Department staff members for feedback. Evaluate feedback and refine as warranted.
- Draft a Request for Proposal if the scope warrants it.
- Be ready to present proposals to stakeholders or councils for approval if called upon.
- Work strategically with relevant IT Department staff to ensure successful implementation.
Technology Innovation (10%)
- Stay informed of relevant technologies utilized in the IT Department, emerging trends, and risks and opportunities.
- Connect with coworkers in the IT Infrastructure Team to be aware of innovations and movements of technology trends within The Salvation Army.
- Participate, where relevant, in research and development for new technology and opportunities for The Salvation Army.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of stakeholders, coworkers, and vendors.
- Advanced knowledge of PC-compatible desktop hardware and software.
- Skilled in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, and other design programs.
- Knowledge of network fundamentals.
- Ability to learn new software applications and systems.
- Knowledge of internal Salvation Army procedures as they relate to business processes.
- Ability to field a variety of project issues and set priorities to address them independently.
- Skilled at problem solving.
- Ability to develop standardized procedures and establish performance measures.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
- Ability to create user documentation and train users.
- Ability to travel extensively within the Territory.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study.
- Five years of experience managing IT deployments (e.g. IP voice, applications, computer hardware, secure access, surveillance systems).
- Five years of experience in an IT support role.
- Industry standard IT certified (e.g. Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA, Project Management Institute)
