National Grid is hiring a Director of Economic Development for New York. This position will be located in our Brooklyn, NY; Melville, NY; Syracuse, NY or Albany, NY office.

Job Purpose

National Grid is looking for a Director of Economic Development who will be responsible for implementing the company's economic development strategies and programs - covering the company's service territory across Upstate New York, New York City and Long Island. The position will promote economic growth and vitality in service territory communities, while supporting National Grid's external affairs and reputational objectives.

Key Accountabilities

* Manage National Grid's economic development programs, projects and activities across all upstate and downstate regions, in order to support the Company's growth agenda and enhance National Grid's reputation as a leader in economic development.
* Lead, motivate and develop a statewide team of economic development professionals in the five regions in which the Company operates in order to maximize their engagement and long-term performance.
* Administer and strategically evolve the Company's portfolio of economic development incentive programs.
* Develop, represent and defend the Company's position on all matters related to Economic Development in rate case proceedings and other regulatory initiatives and processes.
* Represent National Grid in the community and engage with customers, economic development organizations, government agencies, regulators, elected officials and other key stakeholders.
* Develops and executes targeted engagement plans to support business priorities that intersect with government.

* Map existing stakeholder relationships and identify opportunities.
* Communicate, advocate for, and manage strategic economic development objectives throughout New York State.
* Strategize sound economic development policies that align to business objective, and foster economic growth, development of utility infrastructure, and attract and retain businesses in and to New York State.
* Address constituent issues in a timely manner.
* Establish National Grid as a leader in economic development to communities and customers. Share knowledge and develop technical understanding for the utility of the future.
* Drive awareness of initiatives, programs and events designed to improve brand affinity and perception of National Grid.
* Play critical support role to the Corporate Affairs leadership team on discrete projects.
* Manage departmental budget.
* Work with state, regional and local economic development officials and agencies in order to advance economic development programs and strategies consistent with both New York State goals and National Grid's strategic objectives.
* Interact on a daily basis with executives representing commercial/industrial customers, prospective customers and government agencies in support of business attraction, expansion and retention projects.
* Lead rate case management with regard to economic development programs.
* Collaborate effectively and inclusively with National Grid colleagues in communications, external affairs, customer management, legal, regulatory and operations on projects and programs.
* Develop, manage and implement proactive strategies designed to position the company as an environmentally and socially responsible institution, in order to demonstrate National Grid's commitment to a clean energy future and the communities we serve.
* Ensure compliance of the Company's programs, including the administration of tariff-based, ratepayer-funded programs.
* Be available for storm duty and other community engagement events as necessary.

Qualifications

* A Bachelor's degree in business, economics, finance, public policy or related field and at least 10 years related experience, or equivalent work experience. Master's degree in a related field is preferred.
* Broad business and supervisory experience.
* Proven track record of success in economic development.
* Knowledge and experience in program development, management, administration and governance.
* Familiarity with, and understanding of, utility ratemaking, regulation and the regulatory process.
* Analytical skills including budgeting, performance management and program administration.
* Experience developing and managing senior-level stakeholder relationships.
* Skilled in managing change and dealing with ambiguity.
* Possession of a valid driver's license, and an ability and willingness to use personal vehicle on company business.
* Availability for evening and weekend meetings and community events.
* Travel within National Grid USA service territory.

Salary

$145k - $180k a year in Albany, NY and Syracuse, NY.

$175k - $215k a year in Brooklyn, NY and Melville, NY.
