The Office of Strategic Initiatives at the University of Illinois System is actively engaged in supporting the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) on various initiatives aimed at advancing public health outcomes across the state. This partnership leverages the strengths and resources of both institutions to address pressing health challenges and enhance the well-being of communities throughout Illinois. By synergizing the expertise and resources of the University of Illinois System and the Illinois Department of Public Health, this collaborative partnership is poised to make significant strides in advancing public health outcomes, fostering innovation, and creating lasting positive impacts on the lives of individuals and communities across Illinois. The Office of Strategic Initiatives seeks a Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) Prevention Epidemiologist to serve as a Project Manager in MDRO programs, working with the Epidemiology Unit within the HAI and Antimicrobial Resistance (AR) Program in IDPH. This individual will provide epidemiology expertise regarding multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in healthcare settings, with an emphasis on data collection, quality improvement initiatives, preventive practices, and support during outbreak response. This individual will also manage a comprehensive approach to prevent the spread of novel and targeted MDROs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Evaluate capacity to implement novel and targeted MDRO prevention strategies at the facility, local public health, and state public health levels.
  • Design, plan, and implement projects and collaboratives for healthcare providers and partners independently and in coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify and analyze process and outcome measures for prevention activities.
  • Utilizing best practices, disseminate findings orally and in writing to a variety of audiences.
  • Build and maintain relationships with healthcare facilities, laboratories, public health partners, and other relevant groups for MDRO prevention.
  • Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate online and in-person educational programs.
  • Review and facilitate timely communication of laboratory results to the relevant public health jurisdiction and healthcare facility.
  • Perform surveillance and ensure accurate reporting to the XDRO registry, Illinois National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (INEDSS), and other HAI surveillance systems.
  • Inform internal and external stakeholders of key HAI trends, including clusters and emerging outbreaks, to guide prevention and response actions.
  • Assist local health departments and healthcare facilities in organizing and conducting point prevalence surveys.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education:
  • Master's degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, or directly related field from an accredited university.
  • Ability to work remotely, with intermittent travel as necessary.

Required Experience:
  • Four years of professional experience in applied epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, or a related field.
  • Two or more years of experience leading public health projects.


KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Three years of experience related to healthcare-associated infections or other infectious diseases.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques related to epidemiology, public health, and disease outbreak investigations.
  • Proficiency using REDCap and SAS.
  • Three years of experience leading teams.
  • Three years of experience organizing and managing multiple projects, with high attention to deadlines.
  • Demonstrable professional experience communicating in writing and orally with a variety of audiences.
  • Organizational skills demonstrating high attention to detail and the ability to organize multiple priorities.
  • Proficient computer skills and advanced knowledge of applicable computer systems, including Microsoft Office programs: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Sharepoint, and SmartSheets.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as a part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic fast-paced environment.
The budgeted salary range for the position is $85,000 to $102,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. Benefits eligible positions include a comprehensive benefits package which offers: Health, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability & AD&D insurance; a defined benefit pension plan; paid leaves such as Vacation, Holiday and Sick; tuition waivers for employees and dependents.
