Job Overview

The Department of Medical Education at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is seeking applicants for a full-time (12-month), non-tenure track, basic sciences medical educator faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. This faculty member will serve two programs within the College of Medicine: the Medical Sciences Baccalaureate Program (BS) and the Medical School (MD).

As a member of the Medical Sciences Baccalaureate Program Community of Scholars, the candidate's role in the Medical Sciences Baccalaureate Program will include responsibilities both inside and outside of the classroom. Teaching roles will include upper-level courses targeted to 3rd and 4th year students in subjects such as biochemistry, medical genetics, and cell biology. The candidate will support the broader curriculum through participation in various committees, including the curriculum committee. All faculty members in the program also serve as a mentor for groups of students. The position will also include opportunities for developing and publishing innovative pedagogical materials.

The candidate's role in the Medical School will include serving as the course director of Scientific Foundations of Medicine (SFOM). SFOM is the first basic science course of the medical curriculum, which prepares students with the necessary basic science knowledge to succeed in subsequent organ system-based courses which comprise the first 1.5 years of the medical curriculum (Phase I) The candidate will be paired with a clinical course director and will work with this course director to organize the course content, oversee all course activities, and create assessment materials. The basic science course director will present lectures within SFOM and other courses of Phase I according to their subject matter expertise. Additionally, this candidate will work closely with other course directors in ongoing curriculum development and integration of basic science and clinical content.

Essential Functions

  • Directing and teaching upper-level courses in the Medical Science Baccalaureate Program subjects such as biochemistry, medical genetics, and cell biology.
  • Serve as course director for the Scientific Foundations of Medicine course in the Medical School. This role entails working closely with the clinical course director of the course to organize course content, oversee course activities, and create assessment materials.
  • Collaborate with other faculty to develop course materials and strategize innovative teaching methods.
  • Serve on various curriculum and educational program committees, as needed.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D in biochemistry, molecular biology, or cell biology, or similar fields in biomedical sciences.
  • Experience in teaching at the baccalaureate or medical school level.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Experience in course oversight or administration.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching at the baccalaureate or medical school level.
  • A history of participation in medical education scholarship.

  • Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
