Position Overview

The Associate Director, Software Development provides leadership, team building and execution necessary to guide the Software Development team through concurrent software initiatives. This role works with cross-functional teams to create and execute unified Software Development strategy, standards and technologies to be leveraged across the engineering and business partner organizations.The Associate Director is accountable for ensuring documentation, design and architectural reviews are conducted in a manner consistent with company policy, regulatory, and quality requirements. This individual is responsible for continued growth of a successful software development team which supports mission-critical development at Exact Sciences in a wide range of areas of the business.

This position demonstrates exemplary collaboration, technical leadership, and teamwork competencies, as well as building and motivating world-class teams, applying strategic thinking, and executing effectively to deliver a track record of sustained accomplishments. This person is adept at working with multi-faceted teams and leading distributed software engineering teams in highly successful software product and information system development environments. This Associate Director fosters an innovative environment, and demonstrates strong technical and leadership skills, ability to hire outstanding talent, and coach them to success.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Bring formalized architectural modeling practice to the team, looking at the big picture but producing detailed architectural deliverables including but not limited to functional decomposition, component, and deployment diagrams.
  • Raise capabilities in the engineering team, including developing coding, testing and deployment protocols and best practices.
  • Maintain relationships and transparency with key stakeholders (CEO, COO, Sales, Support, Customers and Affiliates).
  • Deliver projects to client satisfaction with quality, on time, on budget.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical ideas in easy-to-understand business terms.
  • Ability to accomplish results through others, particularly by establishing relationships, effective controls and leading in a managed service environment.
  • Hire, develop and grow software engineering capabilities for the company as we expand product lines and systems integrations to encompass centralized IT systems that drive efficiencies across a combined, multi-site organization.
  • Leverage technical expertise and industry trends to influence business, product strategy, development, and quality engineering best practices.
  • Define and implement engineering standards including architecture and design principles, documentation standards, coding standards, code-review methodology, and unit-testing methodologies.
  • Partner with business and technology teams to prioritize roadmaps, requirements, balancing business need with capacity and technology constraints.
  • Influence senior engineering and business leaders to drive increased capability though engineering processes and technologies.
  • Supervise staff; including, but not limited to, organize and prioritize work, write/conduct performance reviews, train/develop, and manage work performance.
  • Communicategoals clearly to employees to ensure understanding and success in achieving them.
  • Motivateandinspireemployees to do their best work through coaching.
  • Maintainmorale and support employee engagement initiatives.
  • Uphold company mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork.

  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work in an office setting, operate a telephone system, and a computer.
  • Ability and means to travel 20% between office locations across the Exact Sciences business.
  • Ability to travel 10% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related study or equivalent project experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in information technology.
  • 10+ years of information system quality/engineering leadership experience.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented, service-oriented architecture, and micro-service architecture, programming principalsand database designs.
  • 10+ years of experience developing software in C#, .NET, Java, Angular, C++, C, JavaScript, Python, SQL, PL/SQL, .NET, or Google Web Toolkit.
  • 10+ years of experience with relational databases, SQL, and ORM technologies (JPA2, Hibernate).
  • 5+ years of experience developing web applications using at least one popular web framework (JSF, Wicket, GWT, Spring MVC).
  • 5+ years of experience with test-driven development.
  • Excellent knowledge of relational databases, such as SQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in software engineering tools.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical analysis to include data reduction.
  • Strong technical leadership and people management skills.
  • Proven ability to drive continuous improvements in organizational performance and efficiency, and career development for employees.
  • Good process management, negotiating, influencing and problem resolution skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent project communication and stakeholder management skills and experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with one of the following areas: ERP, LIMS, Bioinformatics, or clinical data management is strongly desired.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment (SOX, HIPAA, CLIA, GCP, FDA). ISO-13485, IEC-62304.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the clinical lab environment.
  • Enterprise class information technology experience (Custom-COTS Hybrid, Integrated Multi-Channel End-User, Multiple Mobile Platform Delivery,Distributed Big Data).

Salary Range:

$152,000.00 - $242,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
