Assistant Teaching Professor in Rehabilitation and Recreational Therapy

Position Description

The Department of Counseling, Recreation and School Psychology (CRSP) at Florida International University (FIU) invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, teaching faculty position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor in Rehabilitation and Recreational Therapy, to commence in the Fall semester of 2025.

Responsibilities

The appointed faculty member will have an assignment in the areas of instruction (90%) and service (10%). The instruction assignment during the first year will be 4 courses in the fall semester, 4 courses in the spring semester, and 3 courses in the summer semester (11 courses in the academic year). The assignment involves the delivery of undergraduate courses for the Rehabilitation and Recreational Therapy program, including fieldwork and internship courses. The appointee will also function as clinical coordinator, overseeing the clinical experiences of our students.

Beyond instruction and clinical coordination, the position encompasses service contributions to support the department's mission. These may include assisting with the accreditation process of the recreational therapy program, actively participating in curriculum meetings, and representing the department's standards and goals. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain active professional and community involvement to enhance our students educational experiences and raise the profile of the program in the professional, local, and global communities.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements include an earned masters degree or higher in Recreational Therapy or a closely related field with at least 18 credits of recreational therapy graduate coursework.

Candidates should hold an active credential as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).

Preference will be given to candidates showing evidence of excellence in teaching, particularly in the online modality.

A successful candidate will have a proven track record of effectively coordinating a recreational therapy clinical program at an institution of higher education, including successfully navigating the legal and ethical considerations of clinical experiences.

Preference will be given to candidates showing evidence of experience with curriculum-based data tracking (e.g., Learning Management System Outcomes) and data analysis and reporting on student enrollment, retention, and institutional data sources.

About the Program

The Rehabilitation and Recreational Therapy Program at FIU is a vibrant and growing program with a healthy number of applicants and strong enrollment of approximately 600 students. The program offers an undergraduate degree with two tracks; a student may pursue the rehabilitation track or the recreational therapy track. The rehabilitation track is designed for students interested in graduate programs in allied healthcare professions. The recreational therapy track prepares students for a career in recreational therapy and national certification as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Students can pursue the B.S. in Rehabilitation and Recreational Therapy in in-person or fully online modalities. Additionally, South Florida has a wealth of county and municipal parks and recreation systems such as Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces, Broward County Parks and Recreation, and City of Miami Parks and Recreation, among others.
