CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester seeks qualified applicants for the position of Intern for the Mayor's Office. Under the direction of the Chief of Staff, the Intern will serve as a support to the Mayor, Chief of Staff, and Assistant Chief of Staff. The individual will assist with functions and activities of the Mayor's Office. The Intern will provide excellent customer service to constituents and represent the office with a high degree of respect and professionalism. The position will also require weekend and evening availability.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:



  • Participate in planning and execution of Mayor's office agenda.
  • Prepare remarks for events, write talking points and speeches as assigned by the Chief of Staff.
  • Represent the Mayor's office with professionalism and decorum in meetings and events.
  • Stay up to date on local and statewide current events.
  • Attend and participate in events with the Mayor and staff.
  • Research and prepare wide variety of records, reports, analyses and documents as assigned by the Chief of Staff.
  • Provide support as needed to address constituent issues, including but not limited to providing customer service via phone or in person in a friendly, professional manner, take messages with accuracy, transfer phone calls, and appropriately handle or refer questions and requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:



  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent organization skills required.
  • Ability to be receptive to constructive feedback and coaching.
  • Ability to work professionally and compassionately with the public, all levels of staff and management.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and sensitivity when handling inquiries and coordinating responses.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at one time.
  • Ability to adapt to change and to respond well under pressure and at a fast pace.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must be reliable, self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Knowledgeable, or displayed willingness to become knowledgeable, of the Worcester Community.
  • Knowledge of local and state government.
  • Excellent research and data processing skills and ability to prepare clear and concise reports
  • Keen understanding of local and state regulations and codes (i.e tobacco, food, housing, nuisance, etc.)
  • Ability to work with community coalitions
  • Keen understanding of municipal government as it relates to policy, budgets and supporting boards and commissions.
  • Policy development and implementation


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



  • High School Diploma or equivalent, and current enrollment in secondary education
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communication skills


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Six months of experience working in Local Government providing support to elected officials
  • Six months of providing customer service


SALARY: $15.00 Hourly, part time, 10 hours per week, with the potential to increase to 15 hours per week, non-benefited position.
