Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
Student Health Services provides quality health care for students enrolled at Fayetteville State University. Student Health Services promotes and maintains conditions that are conducive for healthful living, to guide and encourage students to accept health as a positive value of life, and to stimulate an interest in students to make healthy adjustments to their environment. Activities of Student Health Services are conducted with special emphasis on the promotion of the nine dimensions of wellness and good bio-psycho-social health care. Student Health Services has the mission of serving as the student's initial contact for the assessment of health problems or concerns. Students are provided with reasonable quality health care for minor illnesses and injuries and are referred to specialists or consultants when necessary. Each healthcare visit is used as an opportunity for health education.

Description of Work Continued:
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The medical lab technologist demonstrates proficiency and follows testing procedures and policies by adhering to equipment and work area quality assurance guidelines and documenting corrective action for any non-conforming event. Prepares reagents, maintains an adequate supply of materials for test procedures, and manages inventory to reduce departmental waste/expense effectively. Exercises clinical judgment in assessing priorities while identifying, problem-solving, and offering solutions to test systems through the appropriate Customer channels, i.e., contacts hotline to troubleshoot with a specialist when necessary to resolve the issue or set up service when applicable. Assists with review and revision of procedures and documentation related to accreditation, adhering to all regulatory requirements for various authorities, including but not limited to Commission on Office Laboratory ( COLA), Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendments ( CLIA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA) and Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care ( AAAHC).
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
A high school diploma or equivalency and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, are required.
Knowledge skills and abilities:
Knowledge-Professional:

  • Considerable knowledge of various laboratory procedures applicable to the areas(s) of work. And laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology.
  • General knowledge of the basic pathophysiological processes being monitored and how medical laboratory science is applied.
  • Maintain competence in clinical problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making; communication and education; medical information evaluation and management; management of patient populations; and a broad range of therapeutic knowledge domains.


Laboratory Operations Testing and Analysis:

  • Perform complex laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to recognize deviations from expected and/or normal results.
  • Recommend new test methodologies and/or modify existing ones to achieve desired results.
  • Prepare and analyze a variety of data; ability to provide detailed documentation and analysis of clinical and research data.
  • Provide clinical interface and discuss results with clinicians.
  • Participate with supervisor in work planning, staff training, evaluating work, and counseling.
  • Manage laboratory resources, including inventory control; have the ability to manage storage and acquisition of specimens.
  • Research and recommend purchasing new and/or replacement equipment and supplies.
  • Review work of others for conformance with quality control procedures; ability to maintain quality control records.
  • Perform safety checks; ability to ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines.

Customer Service & Instruction:

  • Develop and provide instruction and training for medical technology students, new staff, physicians, and other health professionals in the performance of laboratory procedures, including specialized areas of testing.
  • Assist in planning education programs for clinical areas-ability to develop and provide educational materials for patients and the classroom.
  • Participate in formal and informal activities that enhance teaching, leadership, and/or management.

Coordination of Work:

  • Manage and lead the provision of safe, timely, efficient, equitable, effective, and patient-centered pharmacy patient care services and operations for areas of responsibility.
  • Develop measurable, reasonable, and time-bound goals that reflect the priorities of FSU Laboratory.
  • Identifies laboratory-related problems and evaluates collaboratively with other members of the health care team the need for intervention.
  • Establishes patient-specific measurable parameters and time frames for monitoring and follow-up in collaboration with other members of the health care team.
  • Maintain expertise in the selection and use quality improvement and change management methodologies/tools to maximize project outcomes.
  • Confer certain authorities, responsibilities, and accountabilities to the medical staff as a member of the health care team and contribute to the enhanced efficiency and effectiveness of team-based care.
  • Plan and monitor the use of expenditures to meet organizational objectives and compliance.
  • Reconcile laboratory billing & claim reimbursement.
  • Develop plans and lead efforts to improve financial performance in assigned areas of responsibility.

Information Records Administration & Technology:

  • Consult with clinical/ professional staff regarding medical record questions and/or problems.
  • Assist in developing and implementing laboratory audit procedures for completeness and accuracy using multiple guidelines.
  • Assist clinical/professional staff in the design of studies and necessary data collection methods.
  • Coordinate technical issues with FSU IT, laboratory management system, and Electronic Health Management Software system.
  • Coordinates varied records processing activities requiring the application and some interpretation of agency procedures, policies, laws, and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:
Education : Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or biological science or equivalent combination of training and experience. MLT: Associate degree in science and MLT certification
Experience Required: Requires at least three years of experience testing with human specimens as a medical laboratory technologist. Must have supervised a moderate complexity lab for two years. Hematology and Chemistry expertise is required.
