Position Description
The School of Music at Georgia State University in Atlanta is seeking applications from highly qualified artist/teachers for a tenure-track position in Violin at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
As Assistant/Associate Professor of Applied Violin at Georgia State University, the successful candidate will play a vital role as the School of Music collaborates to transform its curriculum and pedagogy to foreground experiential, interdisciplinary, and technologically enhanced learning furthering Georgia State's strategic goal of demonstrating that students from all backgrounds can achieve academic and career success at high rates. Opportunities for growth and support in this position include university-level teaching fellowships and grants through the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Online Education, leadership in instructional innovation through our active learning classroom program, and successive promotion to Associate and/or Full Professor.
Demonstrated and sustained excellence in creative and scholarly activities, teaching, and service is essential for reappointment, tenure, and promotion.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence and create an innovative curriculum that caters to the diverse student population at Georgia State University in line with Georgia State University's commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching.
The selected candidate can expect to:

  • Maintain a high profile as a performer and pedagogue through prestigious local, regional, national, and international engagements;
  • Teach weekly applied violin lessons for undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Conduct/teach a weekly violin studio class;
  • Coach weekly chamber music classes;
  • Work with students on junior, senior, and graduate-level recitals;
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate-level string students;
  • Teach supplementary courses and other related courses as needed and as the schedule allows (i.e., music theory, aural skills, music appreciation, etc.);
  • Work closely with string, instrumental, and all School of Music colleagues;
  • Attend faculty meetings (including those of the string area, department, college, and university);
  • Actively participate in faculty governance at the school, college, and university-level, including service on committees and other faculty administrative assignments as needed


The candidate will be expected to actively attract, recruit, and retain talented students, especially in performance and instrumental music education. Active recruitment of violin students from the state of Georgia and beyond via outreach and recruitment events, including interaction with pre-collegiate students and high school music programs, while maintaining a visible national and international profile as both a performer and pedagogue, is essential.
Recruitment activities may involve the following:

  • Providing sample lessons for prospective students;
  • Recruitment trips to area high schools with strong string programs;
  • Coaching high school ensembles on and off-campus;
  • Active participation in the American String Teachers Association, the Georgia Music Educators Association, and other similar organizations.
  • Teaching and/or performing at esteemed summer music camps;
  • Etc.

Required Experience
Required Qualifications for Appointment at Rank of Assistant Professor

  • At least one (1) year of high-level professional performance experience
  • At least one (1) year of violin instruction at the collegiate level

  • At least three (3) years of high-level professional performance experience
  • At least three (3) years of violin instruction at the collegiate level

Required Education
Master's degree in music at the time of appointment
Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Doctorate in music or equivalent professional experience
  • A record of proven success in the recruitment of exceptional college music majors.
  • An established national/international reputation as a performer.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in additional areas of the music curriculum.

  • Doctorate in music or equivalent professional experience
  • A record of proven success in the recruitment of exceptional college music majors.
  • An established national/international reputation as a performer.

  • Currently employed at the rank of Associate Professor or higher.
