The Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (EEB) is seeking candidates for the position of Academic Advising Professional I. This position will support in-person/main campus students majoring in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Biology, and Bioinformatics, and/or minoring in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Biology, and Marine Science.

Academic advisors serve as frontline contacts for undergraduate students and help them choose degree programs, select courses, and define/refine their interests, as well as refer students to the appropriate faculty members for details on specific courses and for further discussions of individual research and career interests. In addition, they inform students of scholarship and research opportunities, and provide counsel in response to student concerns and complaints. This position will be a primary point of contact for students to receive the most detailed, accurate, and personalized information on how to successfully complete one of the Department's degree programs. EEB advisors also play an integral role in the annual EEB Undergraduate Research Poster Session and EEB Ambassadors program.

This position is in-person.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assesses student development (academic, career, and personal) and promotes academic growth; assists students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.

Advises students on academic and career issues; identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications.

Advises students on general education; identifies options for students to satisfy degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on exceptions and adjustments to programs of study.

Monitors academic progress of students; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for further assistance.

Interprets and explains advising policies and procedures.

Participates in preparation of orientations and presents academic information to new students and parents during orientation.

Evaluates transfer credits from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to degree program.

Maintains student files, records, and database; documents all pertinent student information.

Assists students in exploring research opportunities and scholarships.

Processes degree checks/audits for students planning to graduate.

Assists in the development and coordination of seminars, workshops, and other activities/events.

Helps coordinate the annual EEB Undergraduate Research Poster Session and recruit EEB Undergraduate Ambassadors.

Additional duties may be assigned by the Department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 1 year of relevant experience required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience advising in higher education setting.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students.
