Position Highlights |
This position oversees coordinates and performs operational activities of the microbiology teaching laboratories (Biosafety level 2). The microbiology teaching labs serve over 800 lab students each year in 5 different course, in 20 sections of lab classes. Additionally the LCs make, pack and shipping out over 400 "lab in a box" kit to students around the world each year. The coordinators make media, maintain bacterial cultures, setup up experiments, maintain equipment and assist faculty to deliver high quality and safe educational experiences.

Duties & Responsibilities |
- Sets
up and coordinates laboratories, and experiments including equipment and supplies, clean laboratory after experiments. - Makes
media and clean and prepare glassware - Assists
supervisor in the supervision of teaching assistants; answers questions concerning experiments and training of equipment usage and proper techniques. - Monitors
equipment for proper functioning; performs minor repairs and calibrations on equipment and contacts appropriate party to perform major repairs.
The candidate will work 40 hours a week but the teaching laboratory operations necessitate a lab coordinator be present from 7am to 6pm Monday - Thursday. We accomplish this by having overlapping, non-identical "shifts" to cover the classes. We usually work a shorter shift on Friday. The realities of working with biological samples requires occasional short shifts on Saturdays and/or Sundays. |
Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
- 1 year of relevant work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience working with pathogenic bacteria (BSL-2)
- Experience making laboratory media or experience in food service
- Experience cleaning and maintaining laboratory glassware (eg. operating an autoclave and industrial dishwasher
