Position Overview

Position Summary:
Under immediate supervision and direction, custodians perform custodial work for the general maintenance of university buildings and related work as required.


Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform cleaning in all areas of a building and floor areas such as vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and buffing
  • Clean bathrooms and refill supplies
  • Collect trash from receptacles and empty into designated areas
  • Lock and unlock doors as required
  • Clean porches, entrances and windows of buildings
  • Clean, store and perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Serve as on-call personnel to assist in emergency clean up
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Job Requirements:
High school diploma or GED equivalent is required. No previous work experience is necessary. Must have the ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to observe and use safe working conditions
  • Ability to use and care for janitorial supplies, chemicals and equipment
  • Ability to use a 6ft ladder
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and furniture regularly
  • Ability to operate a buffer, small tools and other equipment related to custodial duties

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed predominantly inside with some outside work
  • Work involves exposure to hazardous conditions with fumes, odors, and toxic situations
  • Employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens
  • Work requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
