At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

We are a complementary team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. As part of a hard-working and accomplished team of engine avionics system engineers, you will directly impact the future of space flight and help us make progress towards our mission of building the road to space through reusable rockets. Join us in advancing our vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth!

In this role, you will support the design and development of avionics subsystem test equipment that meet Blue Origin's needs for a variety of liquid propulsion rocket engines and multiple spaceflight systems. The avionics subsystem includes the controller electronics, software, harness interconnects, instrumentation and electronic exciter used on the engine for ignition and powered flight. You support your team in all aspects of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) development and its use as an operational verification tool. You will contribute to engine avionics design and development by defining software architectures for the HILs that meet program requirements while maintaining commonality with other HILs and enabling re-use at an appropriate level. You will work with the Engines Design Office and your team in using technical standards and processes to enable robust, right-sized avionics test equipment development. This includes sharing lessons learned across the Blue Engines programs to continuously improve how Blue Origin develops and tests avionics and engine control systems.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of specialists, you will support the design of our avionics subsystems through the application of software engineering standard methodologies. You will be encouraged to mentor, both technically and professionally, less-experienced team members in software engineering and development. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for HIL software requirements, design, and architecture
  • Develop software for various prototype objectives
  • Integrate software models, sensor drivers, and hardware emulators
  • Support the integration of flight avionics, operator consoles, and test equipment to verify the requirements and performance of the flight software
  • Team collaboration to support problem investigation and resolution
  • Follow software development lifecycle process from development to release and maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in electrical, computer engineering, or aerospace engineering or related technical degree
  • 5+ years of software development, integration, systems engineering and/or testing experience, which includes complex embedded systems development and testing.
  • Proficiency troubleshooting analog and digital hardware with bench measurement equipment and data acquisition equipment
  • Experience with Linux and other Unix-style operating systems
  • Proficiency with Devops tools such as Gitlab, Docker, Jenkins, and Artifactory
  • Proficiency with higher-level programming languages such as Python or C/C++
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Familiarity with entire liquid rocket engine product life cycle, including software architecture
  • Experience with software languages (Python, C, C++, C# MATLAB, Simulink, LabVIEW RT/FPGA), embedded operating systems, and experience in hardware/software/system development testing and integration
  • Background in data acquisition/measurement fundamentals (analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion physics, time measurement, clock synchronization, etc.)
  • Experience with designing and building a real-time data acquisition system or simulation system on top of Linux
  • Familiarity with sensors including linear variable differential transformers, resistance temperature detectors, thermocouples, pressure transducers, and resolvers
  • Experience with IP networking (IEEE 802.3)
  • Experience with communications protocol RS-422/485
  • Experience with distributed simulation implementation standards such as HLA or DIS
  • Experience with DO-178, NPR-7150, or similar guidelines
